Boom Lift vs Scissor Lift: Which Do You Need?

When you need to work at height, two machines come up most often: the boom lift and the scissor lift. They both get you off the ground safely, but they're designed for very different jobs. Choosing the wrong one can cost you time, money and site access problems.

Here's a breakdown of the key differences — and how to decide which one is right for your project.

What Is a Scissor Lift?

A scissor lift rises straight up using a linked, folding support mechanism underneath the platform. The platform stays directly above the base unit at all times — it doesn't extend out to the sides.

Scissor lifts are best for:

• Indoor warehouse and factory work (racking, lighting, ceiling maintenance)
• Some have a small deck extension typically about 1 meter for reaching over storage shelfs, etc.
• Tasks where you need a large, stable platform for multiple workers or materials
• Flat, even surfaces — electric models especially are designed for smooth floors
• Rough terrain scissor lifts - diesel models are designed for outdoor use with leveling systems on uneven ground.
• Repetitive tasks in the same area where you don't need to move constantly

What Is a Boom Lift?

A boom lift uses an extendable arm — either telescopic (straight) or articulated (knuckle/jointed) — to position the platform. This means the platform can reach out horizontally as well as vertically, accessing positions that are impossible for a scissor lift.

Boom lifts are best for:

• Working over obstacles like machinery, racking or landscaping
• Reaching positions that aren't directly accessible from below
• Outdoor construction sites, building façades and roof work
• Tasks requiring high reach combined with horizontal outreach

Key Differences at a Glance

• Reach direction: Scissor lifts go straight up. Boom lifts reach up and out.
• Platform size: Scissor lifts have larger platforms — better for teams and materials. Boom lift baskets are smaller, typically one or two people.
• Surface requirements: Electric scissor lifts need level hard surfaces. 4WD boom lifts and rough-terrain scissor lifts handle uneven ground.
• Working height: Both can reach significant heights, but boom lifts generally achieve greater working heights.
• Manoeuvrability: Boom lifts can position the platform horizontally where a scissor lift physically cannot go.

Which Should You Hire?

If you're working directly above your access point — on a flat surface, and you need space for tools and materials — a scissor lift hire is likely the more cost-effective and practical choice.
